There are many who think that all golf books come loaded with the usual instructions of improving the game on the public or private golf courses. Well, not always. Some books, of course, provide useful information about golf but there are others that provide a delightful insight in the lives of famous golfers; a man’s struggle with his mediocre golfing skills or let the people know about the importance of mind power while playing on some of the most challenging public or private golf courses. “Straight Down the Middle” written by Josh Karp does not follow the path of regular golf books that is loaded with tips and instructions for people struggling with the game of golf. It depicts the personal journey of the author in a humorous and lighthearted manner. Karp is a journalist and a former 18-handicap player who sets out on a tour to know about different techniques that will help him to become a better golfer and ends up being something more than that – a better human being. He meets different people on his way and each of them contributes something that enriches his life and perspective. Karp’s experiences across the various public and private golf courses of North American and Scotland are both enlightening and fun to read.

‘Straight Down the Middle’ is written with a lot of passion and enthusiasm. The unique fact about this book is that the author highlights the plight of the mediocre golfers, who are passionate about golf but is denied from possessing great golfing skills. The lessons that Karp learnt at the end of his journey (play golf without trying too hard, achieve mental peace to improve the swing and many others) will be definitely applauded by those who love indulging in golfing in their free times.

“The Secret of Hogan’s Swing” by Tom Bertrand tries to unravel the secrets that legendary golfer Ben Hogan was carrying along with him. Hogan had a tremendous impact on the golf swing theory and this book provides an informative insight how Hogan dedicated his life in the pursuit of golfing excellence. It also explains the relationship that Hogan shared with his protégé John Schlee and the lessons that were passed on to Schlee by this great golfer. Schlee has watched Hogan playing on various public and private golf courses for 5 years and Schlee’s skills reflected Hogan’s knowledge and guidance. In this book Tom Bertrand, who spent 7 years with Schlee, shares all those knowledge. The best part about this golf book is that it not only focuses on the technical aspects of golfing but also highlights on the mental processes involved in the game. The Secret of Hogan’s Swing, in a nutshell, digs out the essence of Hogan’s wisdom and presents it in a simple and easy manner.

Roy Palmer’s “Golf Sense, Practical Tips on How to Play Golf in the Zone” tries to convince the readers about the importance of concentration and body postures that can make a great difference to the game. In this golf book, Palmer takes a different approach of highlighting the bad habits that golfers often learn on the field and provides information regarding how to unlearn them. To provide a clearer understanding of the concepts and technical terms, the author introduces the fictional character of Tom, with whose frustrations and difficulties, the golfers can easily relate to. This golf book is a ‘must read’ for all those golfers who deliver a perfect swing sometimes but fails to maintain the consistency. Both public and private golf courses can be challenging at times; this book helps the golfer to become a more consistent player and to learn to simplify their game.
